To open the Summer Review "Meeting the Author" on Saturday 6 April at 5 p.m. at the Fantini Club, will be the book "Il giallo del Tour" written by Beppe Conti, an illustrious signature of Italian sports journalism and current Rai Sport columnist.
Triumphs and tragedies, historical exploits, behind the scenes, secrets, mysteries and misdeeds of the legendary protagonists of the Tour de France, the most important race in the world, from 1903 to the present day. The first winner was from Valle d'Aosta, Maurice Garin, a chimney sweep who renounced Italy for France. A century ago the first Italian winner, Ottavio Bottecchia, in 1924 and '25. Then in '27 his mysterious death on the roads of Friuli. The Tour entered the legend in 1930 when the organisers created the national teams, a formula that exalted the exploits and triumphs of Coppi and Bartali in tricolour jerseys directed by Alfredo Binda. The true story of the passing of the water bottle between Gino and Fausto. The mysteries and the mystery of the withdrawal of our national team in 1950 while it was dominating the field.
Nencini's feat and Rivière's tragedy, Simpson's death on the Ventoux, Gimondi's unexpected and magical triumph. The mad exploits of Merckx, the irresistible Hinault, Chiappucci and Bugno beaten by Indurain, strangely favoured by the long time trials.
The tragedy of Casartelli coming down from the Pyrenees. The legend of Pantani, the last champion to win, in the same summer, first the Giro and then the French race.
Armstrong's fraud, the arrival of the British. Our last great triumph with Vincenzo Nibali, right up to the duels between Pogacar and Vingegaard.
What better occasion than the eve of the 27th Granfondo Via del Sale, to relive the emotions of the Tour that, in 2024, will see its Grand Départ start from Italy, developing over three stages that will also tread the roads of Romagna.
